for Pikeminnow, Smallmouth Bass and Pumpkinseed Sunfish
Native to eastern North America, this invasive species was introduced to British Columbia in the early 1900s and has established populations in southern B.C., including the Columbia, Thompson, and Fraser River Watersheds, and Vancouver Island.
Why is it considered invasive? Pumpkinseeds can outcompete native fish species for resources, negatively impacting their populations. They have been observed to consume amphibians and small fish, potentially disrupting the food web.
